The Creative Process
Writing and singing for me is an amazing and therapeutic experience. I really love to write songs that are raw, gutsy and emotionally expressive. Songs that are honest, touching and piercing to the heart. For me the melody and lyrics usually come at the same time. There is often something or someone that triggers a flow of creativity. If I’m open and present enough in that moment I can ride that wave and allow it to take me to new creative places. These are precious moments and gifts. I find that the best time to write is when there’s a strong emotion present. Your feelings are heightened and you can capture the feeling and moment more intensely. Sometimes the songs are written right away and for others it may take years. I’ve realized that it’s something I can’t control. What’s important, I think, is to stay connected with what you are writing and feeling and to allow its own timing and space. I try to let go of the ego and the censoring and critical voice.
When the lyrics and melodies are written I than get together with a musician who helps me do the arrangements and complete the music writing process. For many of my songs I’ve been fortunate to work with Danny McErlain. I think he’s one of Toronto’s best piano players. He’s been extremely skillful in capturing the essence of my songs by molding the music to fit my voice and melody. I feel very lucky and grateful to work with him.
The human voice is constantly evolving. From experience I’ve seen how my voice has changed through the years. I’ve come to realize that just as we shed the layers of the self when doing personal work we do the same with our voices. I feel that on our journey we are also finding our true voice that speaks deeply and clearly from the heart. I envision this as a place where your voice is in harmony, one and connected to the divine. Where you are singing from the core of your being deep within your heart. This is what I aspire to.

Danny McErlain
Danny McErlain has been a mainstay of the Toronto music scene for almost 30 years. His versatility keeps him in demand as pianist, arranger and conductor. On piano Danny is busy in all genres from jazz to stage musicals to classical and opera; performing in intimate club settings to major venues such as Roy Thomson Hall, The St. Lawrence Centre and Hummingbird Centre to name only a few.
In the jazz circle Danny works with many of Toronto’s finest talent. The role of vocal accompanist holds a special interest – old style blues, The Great American Songbook or new originals provide the challenge of becoming an instant arranger at the keyboard.
Conductor of the Civil Service Choir for more than ten years and as of June 2004 has taken leadership of The Ambiance Singers of Mississauga.
Danny is pianist for clarinet virtuoso Bob DeAngelis and his tribute to Benny Goodman with symphony orchestra. Performing numerous concert dates throughout Canada and the U.S.
